Last semester Bobby has really struggled with a couple of subjects. Taking zero's and refusing to do his work. I have thought that he was being lazy. I have prayed and prayed about this new semester that it would be dramatically better than the last one. I have even considered that if there is not change in his attitude and his work ethic than he would be going back to Public school which I don't think is a good idea and is definately not an option we like. We are 2 days in and we are in the same rut. There are 2 main subjects that are an issue. Math and Grammar. These were both subjects that he was behind before.
In trying to keep him on grade level whether he was really there or not we have pushed him. I thought that this was stupid that we are struggling so with these 2 subjects since they for the most part should be review. After a very grueling couple of days of Math and not much else. I prayed for answers today. I then got to wondering if he was really struggling with understanding the topic or if he was really being lazy. So I sat him down for a heart to heart about these 2 subjects. We looked at stuff online and worked at determining just exactly where we are. We will be going back to 5th grade math, and picking up there starting tomarrow. We were already doing 5th grade Grammar, but starting tomarrow we are going back and doing the 4th grade grammar. I think in my haste to push him through and keep him on grade level I misevaluated where he really was. We started home schooling 3 years ago. The first year we spent figuring out Christopher, then dealing with Chris and his challenges. After Chris started back to public school the senario changed. We went through several different cirriculums before we found one we really like. We started using BJU Math the end of last school year, Bobby was doing great. He was doing so well that when it was time to get this years cirriculum I automatically got the next year up. So we stopped in the book and then picked up the new year with a new book. We liked BJU so much that we decided to use all of their cirriculum, or at least prodominately. We really like it, it seems to be a really good fit for our family. So we guesstimated where he should be and bought accordingly. Upon reevaluation we were wrong initally.
Bobby is a very smart kid and I have really been baffled on his grades and the fact that his whole attitude has been horrid since this school year started. We always did those 2 subjects first thing in the morning, and then he was nasty the rest of the day about everything. My prayer is that with the reevaluation and the changes that things will improve. His grades and his attitude.
