Seeking Advice

I am requesting suggestions and ideas to help with a challenge I have with my son. I assign him to read 2-3 pages so that we can discuss the lesson. He reads them but cannot answer the simplest questions from his reading. I have suggested that he read it aloud, that sometimes help me. He refuses. I spoke with him about this subject. He said that when he is assigned to read something he doesn't want to he doesn't enjoy it. He also got very agitated about it. He implied that if he didn't want to do something he didn't have to.

I have been praying about this situation for some time. I still don't feel that I know how to handle it and I am seeking advice. If you have any ideas, tips or thoughts anything would be grateful. I find it very frustrating that he shuts his brain off if I assign him to do something he does not want to do. This is an all round problem in our house with all the kids. He is the only with the reading challenge but all of them have this challenge with chores and the like.
